The civic body’s plan to send out property tax bills by September have been delayed as the software to generate the bills is not yet ready. The final property tax bill is being calculated according to the capital value-based system that was approved in June. The property tax bills are now likely to be delivered to citizens in November.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now asked the software developer to hand over the software to it by October 15. Once it gets the software, the BMC will conduct trials to see if all its concerns are being addressed by the software. Changes, if any, will be made to the software to ensure smooth functioning.
“The process of data entry and the various calculations involved in computing the tax are very complex. We don’t want to rush into it,” said joint municipal commissioner S S Shinde. Civic officials said that once the software is ready, citizens will be able to calculate property tax on their own and check if the BMC has sent them the correct bill. Departing from the earlier system of general tax coding (single ledger code), the BMC is now using property-wise coding. “This will help in better accounting,” said Shinde.
Along with the final property tax bill, citizens will also receive a special notice that will reflect their property’s capital value. Citizens will get 21 days to raise objections, if any, on the bill.
